Weekly Weather Event -Week of June 20
June 23, 2022As summer has just officially begun, record high temperatures swept the United States this week. In the midst of a heat dome, parts of the Midwest have suffered through some of the highest temperatures to date. On Monday, Minneapolis set a daily record high with a temperature of 101 degrees, and hit the triple digits for the first time since 2018. Extreme heat also caused some roads to buckle and crack in the Minneapolis area. Throughout the week, the heat has moved its way to the southeast and relief from a cold front will arrive in the Midwest this weekend.
Heat domes occur when high atmospheric pressure traps in heat that can cause extreme weather occurrences such as wildfires, drought and heat-health related issues. It’s important to practice heat safety during the summer months. Effects from heat exhaustion and heat stroke can become detrimental to one’s health. The National Weather Service advises to check in on friends and family, especially those who are vulnerable or do not have air conditioning. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
