My primary research interests are in tropical dynamics and deep convection. This research area captured my focus due to the many fascinating intellectual challenges remaining. Some questions I am interested in are:

How is the vertical structure of rainfall over the tropical oceans determined?

What influence does the vertical structure of rainfall have on convective amplification/decay?

Why are convective storms more intense over land than over the ocean?

The tools I work with are observations, simplified theory/models and explicit numerical models of deep convection.

Researchers with a variety of backgrounds/skillsets can usefully contribute to answering many fundamental problems in my research area. If you have strong basic math and science skills and are interested in attending graduate school in atmospheric science or climate at the UW-Madison, contact me.
