Introduction

Pilots must know how to read weather maps.

Assignment

Given a surface map and an upper air map (both maps are below these questions) for the same day, answer the following questions. Use states and geographic features as a reference in locating the weather features, and email the instructor you answers.

1. Where are the fronts located on the surface map?

2. Where are the fronts located on the surface map that would be associated with possible thunderstorm development?

3. What is the pressure of the strongest low on the surface map and where is it located?

4. What is the pressure of the strongest high on the surface map and where is it located?

5. Where would you expect thunderstorms to possibly develop?

6. Using the upper air map, where would the trough axis be located? Where are the Low pressures at the surface located in relation to the trough (e.g. east, west, north, south)

7. Using the upper air map, where would the ridge axis be located?
