Karimar Ledesma-Maldonado

I’m Karimar Ledesma-Maldonado, an Atmospheric, Ocean, and Space Science graduate student at UW-Madison. My research focuses on understanding the forecasted dynamical evolution of the African easterly wave (AEW) that develops into Tropical Cyclone (T.C.) using the singular vector technique using the WRF model. Before starting at UW Madison, I earned a B.S. in Theoretical Physics with a curricular sequence in Atmospheric Science from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus, and two M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Nevada, Reno, and UW-Madison.

In addition to research, I like to be involved with the AOS community by joining different committees. Currently, I’m the coordinator for the AOS Department Seminar and a member of the AOS Mentorship Program (AMP) and Colloquium committees. Outside of AOS, I have joined different committees that have allowed me to create opportunities to inspire future generations over the last few years. I’m a member of the AMS Committee for Hispanic and Latinx Advancement (CHALA), where I’m the student lead and a member of the Puertoririqueños en las Ciencias Atmoféricas (PCAM) committee.

Former committees: AOS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department committee, AOS Summer Research Program (SRP) planning committee, and AMS Mind the Gap.

In my free time, I like to run, bike and dance.
